How Hum Works
Hum plays sound that's synthesized on your iPhone in real time — nothing is a recording, and nothing ever loops. Choose Sleep mode to wind down with a timer and a gentle fade-out, or Study mode to hold focus for as long as you need.
Previewing Sounds
Every sound in Hum can be previewed for free. Tap any locked sound and it plays for 60 seconds, with a live countdown, before pausing and showing the option to subscribe.
System Requirements
- iOS 17.0 or later
- iPhone (not optimized for iPad)

Using Hum
Sleep Timer
In Sleep mode, set a timer for however long you want sound to play. As the timer winds down, Hum fades the volume out smoothly instead of stopping abruptly, so you aren't jolted awake.
Background Playback & Lock Screen
Hum keeps playing when you lock your phone or switch apps. Play, pause, and the timer are all available from the lock screen and Control Center. Playback automatically pauses if you receive a phone call or your Bluetooth audio device disconnects, and you can resume it manually afterward.
Why the Sounds Are Synthesized
Every sound in Hum — rain, ocean, colored noise, and more — is generated on your device with audio synthesis, not played back from a recording. That means each session is seamless, with no audible loop point, and no audio files ever need to be downloaded or stored.
Troubleshooting
No Audio Playing
- Check that your iPhone's side switch or Focus mode isn't silencing media
- Check the volume using the physical buttons or Control Center
- If using Bluetooth, confirm your headphones or speaker are connected
- Force-quit and reopen Hum
Playback Stopped Unexpectedly
Hum automatically pauses playback during phone calls or when a connected Bluetooth audio device disconnects. Reopen the app or use the lock screen controls to resume.
